Otolaryngology
Otolaryngology is a specialty of medicine that deals with diseases and disorders that may affect the ears, nasal passages, throat and their connection points in the face and neck.
The ENT visit includes a patient's medical history regarding lifestyle, the presence of symptoms, previous pathologies, any current treatments, and medications taken.
The specialist will then perform a physical examination, including all the tests that can help identify the causes of the symptoms described by the patient.
In particular, at the doctor's discretion and depending on the patient's needs, the following additional tests may be performed:
a video-rhino-pharyngo-laryngoscopy (or, more briefly, videofibroscopy) exam that is performed with a thin fiber-optic endoscope and which allows exploration of the inside of the nose, the communication ports with the paranasal cavities, the nasopharynx with the opening of the Eustachian tubes, the oropharynx, the hypopharynx and the larynx with the vocal cords.
a pure-tone audiometric test that allows for a comprehensive study of the patient's hearing function.

ADVANCED FIBERSCOPY
The POLISMedica Otolaryngology Clinic is equipped with a modern fiber-optic video rhinopharyngolaryngoscope that allows for a particularly accurate examination of the upper airways.
The test is performed by passing a thin optical fiber through one nostril until it reaches the nasopharynx, the region immediately behind the nose. Once the nasopharynx is reached, the ENT specialist—able to view the images coming from the tip of the instrument through an optical viewer or a video camera—can obtain a clear and complete view of the pharynx and larynx.
The exam is slightly uncomfortable but completely painless.
This method is now an almost indispensable test for the study of the main pathologies of the larynx (voice alterations, etc.), of the pharynx (adenoid hyperplasia, etc.) and for the study of nasal obstructive disorders (rhinosinusitis, nasal obstruction of other nature).
The test allows for photographic documentation of the acquired images.
